WEEK BEGINNING: 3/4/17
This week, we edited our final cut and within this we enhanced any last features such as the sharpness of the clips and we also added the text messages. In addition to this, we also used colour grading to further intensify the cinematic look of the movie opening. We gave a blue tint to it so that we could get across the eerie and cold mood and atmosphere which is conventional for our genre and these were also the moods and atmospheres mentioned in our target audience research. I also completed and uploaded all my evaluation questions.
WEEK BEGINNING: 27/3/17
We started to edit our title cut and we completed this so that we could start on the sound cut edit. In our title cut we chose the font from the typography choices for the title as well as for the bills. We collected feedback for our title cut and based on that we started editing our sound cut. In our sound cut we added our sound track as well as the additional foley sound. We also got rid of the unwanted ambient sound and controlled the volume on each clip to make the whole video flow.
WEEK BEGINNING: 20/3/17
I decided to start on answering my individual evaluation questions. I planned my answers then I started to edit and piece them together. I also edited the group evaluation question 2 from all the footage that we gathered. We also discussed the promotion for our film. I was in charge of producing the teaser film poster and placing it on different advertising columns.
WEEK BEGINNING: 13/3/17
This week, we completed the transition cut. We made sure to take into consideration what our target audience said. However, our opening was still considered a bit to long therefore, we created a second version of our transition cut. We then found it appropriate to gain feedback from an A2 Media Studies class as this feedback could be technical and would help us when making our next cut. We led the focus group and showed them both versions and asked them to compare and contrast both as well as asking them if they thought it needed any improvements. We also filmed our group evaluation questions (2 and 5) this week.
WEEK BEGINNING: 06/3/17
As a group, we completed our rough cut and uploaded it onto YouTube. We then decided to get some feedback from our target audience for our edited rough cut. I edited the feedback and I also was able to successfully take their comments on what they liked and what they thought could be improved on board. Keeping the feedback in mind, we moved on to editing our transition cut. We discussed as a group which evaluation questions we thought we would do as a group and how we will present them. We decided on doing question 2 and 5 as a group.
WEEK BEGINNING: 27/2/17
We looked through all our footage and created our shot scrutiny and edit decision list (EDL) to help us when it got to editing our footage. We looked through almost over 200 rushes and came to a decision of which shots we were going to use and why (in focus, good lighting, everything in shot etc.) After this, we started to edit our rough cut.
WEEK BEGINNING: 20/2/17
During this week, we went through our final billing order which was then produced by Kanaiya. I also went and got some additional Foley sounds that may be need for the film such as the mug shattering, footsteps, light switch etc. We also recorded the actor performing his lines again just in case that the ones on the shoot didn't go as well as we'd hope or are unclear.
WEEK BEGINNING: 13/2/17
I created the shot blocking for each scene that came in handy when setting up the camera and lighting during the shoot. Throughout the week, we got together and did a few test shoots and rehearsals as per the production schedule to make it easier once it came to the actual filming. We worked through the shot list and we decided that some shots needed to be changed as they didn't quite work well and as expected. We then fully completed shooting all our footage that we needed following the production schedule. This had to be done in quite a short amount of time therefore it was essential that we were on task and focused throughout this whole process of production.
WEEK BEGINNING: 06/2/17
WEEK BEGINNING: 30/1/17
This week, we created our storyboard for our film opening. We decided to make it into a video format to help us visualise each scene. We finished off any remaining tasks that we had and I researched into how to make our opening look more professional and cinematic. Myself and Kanaiya made a prop list for the items that we would need for our opening and this gave us a rough idea on the budget that we would need in order to produce the final product successfully. As the director, I held a casting for the role of Aaron, our main character and was assisted by the producer, Kanaiya.
WEEK BEGINNING: 23/1/17
WEEK BEGINNING: 16/1/17
As a group, we annotated a script and conducted a script to screen analysis, for Jigsaw, to understand how each section is importance and how it shapes the action taking place. This would be helpful when creating our own script for our movie opening. Following on from this, I annotated a script for the film opening using the conventions as well as breaking it down into the micro-elements (mise-en-scene, camerawork, sound & editing). After the first draft for our script for our movie opening was created, we did a script read through, as a group, to see how it would sound and also to help us visualise the script. From this we decided to make a few changes and any mistakes that were visible. We also created a research summary collectively as a group for our research.
WEEK BEGINNING: 09/1/17
This week, we prepared for our Green-light Meeting which we pitched to our possible production/distribution companies. In our pitch, we mentioned how we will use each of the micro-elements in our movie and we talked about why we are different, scalability as well as different marketing techniques we will use to promote our film. Me and Kanaiya prepared a one sheet to give to our production companies in order to summarise the plot and what to expect. We also prepared a final head-on (Animoto) and included this in our pitch. The head-on was a series of images that helped give an insight of our film and it included a soundtrack that would be similar to one that may feature in our film.
WEEK BEGINNING: 19/12/16
Individually, we had to come up with a working title, a plot, a log line and a head on. I made mine with the working title: Treason. I pitched my idea to the class and got feedback on what went well and what could have been better. The class then voted for which storyline they liked the most from our group. Me and Jay were tied and we had to decide which film to go with and we chose Jay's. We also created a script to screen analysis for an independent film in order to realise the importance of the script and how a script is properly formatted and written.
WEEK BEGINNING: 12/12/16
During this week, we focused on target audience. We decided to use social media for our target audience profiles. I created a target audience profile using the social networking site: Instagram. I posted images that would reflect our target audience such as movies watched, university student life and upcoming TV shows. We conducted research on our target audience and filmed them answering a few questions that would help us when producing our film opening. I edited it all together and published it onto YouTube. Along with target audience, we delegated job roles and I chose to be the director (as i already had the most experience in this field) and production designer. I created a poster using Padlet to outline the job of each job and how it would help.
In order to get our creative juices flowing, we played a random story game in which we were given a random movie title, a prop and a location. Using these 3 things we had to create a film plot. This was useful when it came to actually planning a plot for our film.
WEEK BEGINNING: 05/12/16
This week, I created a mind map outlining and explaining genre typecasting and I included the actors that mostly would feature in our chosen genre. I then created a billing order for the film opening of Casino Royale. As a group, we compared each of our billing orders to notice the similarities and differences. We talked about the typography and design that would most be expected in our genre. Thereafter, we collaboratively created a slideshow discussing the different theories behind story and narrative, I discussed Propp in great detail. We also talked about the representations in our genre and I focused on gender and place. I researched the director famous for directing films of our genre. I chose him as he used a particular technique called Bayhem.
WEEK BEGINNING: 28/11/16
Individually, we analysed the shot by shot remake by filming ourselves stating what we thought went well and what could have been better as well as the skills we gained and developed from our previous tasks. This was then put together and editing by Jay. As a group we collaborated to make a presentation explaining the purpose of a film opening along with the different types of openings. I analysed the opening for 2 movies of the superhero fiction genre (Batman vs Superman and Suicide Squad) to look at the general conventions in every film as well as the micro-elements. To help us finalise our genre, we made an online pros and cons list for our two possible genres: Sci-Fi and Action/Crime. Following that, I analysed 2 other film opening but for our chosen genre, Action/Crime. I chose the contemporary films Fast and Furious 6 and Skyfall to analyse in the same way. I then made a poster highlighting the importance of genre.
WEEK BEGINNING: 21/11/16

After the shooting script was made, we did our location scouting for each scene and we each took pictures of the three possible locations for each scene. We then explained the advantages and disadvantages of each location. This then lead us to create a location recce for the chosen locations. I also produced the location and actor release forms based on other ones that I had seen. For the external outdoor locations, I formulated and email and attached the location release form asking for permission to use their property. I also made a production schedule to follow for the shoot days. I also made a video talking through all the costume props and make-up that we will use in our opening.
WEEK BEGINNING: 30/1/17

WEEK BEGINNING: 23/1/17
This week, we filmed the read through our second draft for the script and made some changes for the final draft. I also did some research into classification and presented it using PowToon. I researched what rating our film would be using the BBFC guidelines and why. The final script draft was formulated and from there I did some script blocking from the role and view of the production designer, I focused on the mise-en-scene. I also did a script breakdown and created an online leaflet/poster. I analysed the plot, logic, exposition, complication, tension, main question, main action, cause and resulting action, conclusion, hero/villain, most interesting character and lastly the setting.

WEEK BEGINNING: 21/11/16
We created a shot by shot remake this week in order to strengthen our editing and filming skills. We decided on using the film opening from a movie of our chosen genre and this film was Snatch. I directed and filmed this shot by shot remake by looking closely to both the opening and the shot list that Kanaiya had created. We set up the shots according to the mise-en-scene in the opening, using a black/grey backdrop and 2 actors. We set up the lighting as it was in the opening in order to create the dark atmosphere that was portrayed. Whilst editing, we realised that the shots we took were very similar to the ones in the Snatch opening and this made it easier for us to understand the timing of the shots.
From this task, I gained more knowledge on how to accurately use the camera to replicate shots and what effect each shot has and its importance. I also gained more knowledge on how to direct the actors in order to create a remake that was as close as possible to the real opening. I feel that I was successful at directing and filming as an individual. During editing, I felt that I had developed my skills as we decided to use a more enhanced software (Adobe Premiere). As a group I feel that we communicated well as it all went smoothly.
WEEK BEGINNING: 14/11/16
During this week, we came up with a few ideas of production names and logos after leading a focus group. Going into the focus group we had already prepared a short list of names that we had come up with collectively and we decided to pitch some of the names and ideas we had planned. We asked the focus group which ones they thought appealed to them and if they had any other suggestions for names that were different. They all liked the name and idea behind Aperture Productions as it was unique and it stood out to them, therefore we decided to make that our primary focus. We also had back up ideas that we thought could also work, mine was Illuminate films. However, after much discussion, we decided that we would stick to our original idea for Aperture Productions.
WEEK BEGINNING: 7/11/16
This week, we completed a preliminary task that included producing a short video. This video had to meet 3 different criterias: The 180 degree rule, shot reverse shot and match on action. I was in charge of making the script and Jay along with Kanaiya produced the storyboard. We decided to stick to a simple storyline in order to make it understandable and we collectively decided that we would focus more on getting used to the equipment such as the camera and tripod. We all had a go at filming the task to ensure we all understood how to use the equipment along with individually editing to get used to the editing software (iMovie).
From this task, the skills that I learnt and developed were and will be very useful when it comes to filming and editing our action movie opening. I developed my communication skills, not only within the group, but also with the actors that we used to feature in our film. I also learnt how important the role of the director is as they have to make sure that everything goes to plan and that the script, as well as the story board is followed to allow room for minimum error. This also made it easier whilst we were editing as everything made sense and was put together smoothly.
